The 400-Million-Year-Old Monster Living in Your Home

Andre Williams · May 19, 2026

Long before the first dinosaurs ever set foot on Earth, a small, silver-shimmering creature was already crawling through the primeval forests of the Devonian period. This organism has survived every mass extinction in the history of our planet — and now it is almost certainly living in your bathroom. Here is the remarkable story of one of the oldest surviving animals on Earth.

A Living Fossil Crawling Through Your Home

The silverfish (Lepisma saccharina) is one of the oldest surviving insect species in the world. With its streamlined, scaly body, two long antennae, and three thread-like appendages at its rear, it looks like a creature from another era — which, in essence, it is. Measuring barely two centimeters, it moves across smooth surfaces with a sinuous, fish-like motion and vanishes into cracks and crevices at the slightest disturbance. Despite its unremarkable appearance, this animal carries within it an evolutionary success story that is virtually unmatched.
